Ben’s aerial drone research includes conceptualizing drone applications beyond aerial photography that allow the vehicle to interact with the physical environment to gather data or place sensors. One experiment investigated the ability of a drone to collect water samples. While working on the Drone Journalism Lab’s 2012 Nebraska drought story, Ben, along with members of the Drone Journalism Lab and University of Nebraska-Lincoln NIMBUS Lab, performed a water sample collection in the Platte River. No analysis was performed on the water sample, but the successful water collection operation demonstrated that drones can perform functions beyond aerial photography.
